Northamptonshire Youth Commission for Police, Fire and Crime 2017/2018


Are you 11 -24 years old and living in Northamptonshire? Would you like to be a part of the Northamptonshire Youth Commission 2017/18 and have your voice heard and help make a difference?

  1. What is the Youth Commission for Police and Crime?

The Youth Commission allows young people to get involved in and express their views on a range of issues affecting our communities where they live. The Youth Commission of Northamptonshire enables young people to support, challenge and inform the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner Mr Stephen Mold and other services including Northamptonshire Police. This is an important role, as it helps the Commissioner and Police make better decisions to meet and understand the needs of local young people.

  1. Who can join the Northamptonshire Youth Commission?

This role is open to anyone aged 11-24 years living in the Northamptonshire policing area. We are looking for people who will be good team players, who will be committed to the project and willing to do all the activities involved. We’re looking to ensure that the Youth Commission is made up of a diverse group of young people who broadly reflect the make-up of the local population, including those who may have direct experience of the police and justice system. In total, we are currently looking to recruit between 30-40 young people.

 

If I join, what will I have to do?

 

During 2017/18, members of the Youth Commission will:

  • Take part in Youth Commission sessions: You will participate in a number of sessions of the Youth Commission throughout the coming 12 months.
  • Work on special topics: You will pick a topic (from a shortlist) that interests you to work on with a small group of other members. The shortlist will include topics such as mental health, anti-social behaviour and hate crime, domestic abuse etc.
  • Gather the views of other young people: You will be given support to carry out peer research with other young people in schools, colleges, universities and youth groups.
  • Plan and get involved in events: You will work in a team to design and plan events to engage with other young people in your area. There will also be the opportunity to get involved in community Policing events. You will work with the OPCC and police on delivering some of the recommendations that come out of the research.
  • Report back to the Police and Crime Commissioner: You will contribute towards the analysis of information gathered from young people in your area, and help to present back your conclusions to the Police and Crime Commissioner and other partners in your area.

What will I get from being part of the Youth Commission team?

  • You will have the opportunity to discuss issues with the Police and Crime Commissioner: say what young people think about police and crime in their area and find out more about policing.
  • Meet new people: You will gain skills in social research, which you will be able to put on your CV for work or application to Further or Higher Education.
  • Be an ambassador to other young people: Give a voice to young people in your area.
  • Volunteer certificate
  • Help you to build up your CV

  • Section 1: if you are under 18 you must also fill out the section regarding your Parent /Guardian /Carer. All Youth Commission members will be asked to bring along a signed consent form to their induction day.

Section 4: Please complete the self-declaration statement. Tell us if you have ever committed any offences or had any difficulties that we should be aware of (behavioural offences? anti-social behaviour? criminal offences? other?). This will not necessarily affect your application to the Youth Commission; however, we may ask you more about it. What happens next?

Once we receive your application we will then carry out some informal conversations with a shortlist of applicants over the phone and those shortlisted will be invited to an informal interview on a number of dates and locations across the county. (Please select the most convenient location on the application form)
